Tip Of The Month

What is Stretch?

Stretch will enhance your timing, improve action reaction and develop better communication and response time. Stretch  in WCS is to produce the kinetic energy between two dancers. Example (a basic six count pattern)The proper time to create stretch with your partner is on counts (4 5&6 &) during a break ending in open position. Stretch should complete on the & count between the last and first count of your patterns; e.g. 6&1 (AKA 6 &a 1)

While some people mistake release of the arm or tension in the arm as connection or stretch; it is the body from the core that stretches away from the connecting point while compressing on the heel of the foot. Stretch is expanding the distance from one another to create a kinetic energy into the next transition.

The leader must offer a connecting point and the follower must establish the connection. One partner cannot achieve this alone. As stretch happens through the body as it continues through the arm an fingers. If you stretch by expanding then you must allow the stretch to return to it’s normal state as you commence count one. On a basic pattern, you should not feel resistance by the end of count 1 through 2 3&, that is considered tension.

There is a fine line between what is known as a spaghetti arm and resistance.
The spaghetti arm has a good ingredient, it is relaxed, but also collapsed. You want to keep the arms relaxed to relieve tension, but not collapsed. Collapsed causes slack which creates disconnect. You want to keep the arms parallel to the floor while connecting and stretching. Resistance stays relaxed while stretching; otherwise you’ll have tension.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Ways to Improve your dancing

Besides your lessons, there are ways to improve your dancing. Lessons are great, but unless you’re taking 3 private lessons a week; practicing what you’ve been taught is best. This sometime is best practiced in a non-social dance atmosphere. Practicing by yourself and practicing with a friend or partner. Social dance as much as possible in addition to your practice and lessons. It is sometimes difficult to practice your technique in a social dance environment. You should just dance when you go out to dance, don’t get caught up in analysis paralysis.

TIP OF THE MONTH

What Judges Look For

The 3 T’s. What are the 3 T’s. If you are a competitor, see what Judges are looking for. There are certain major criteria judges are looking for to have winning performance. The 3 T’s are the first among many other criteria; that would include such things as Timing, Technique and Teamwork. The other criteria would include Showmanship, Content and/or Choreography, Musicality and Degree of difficulty. Though there are many ingredients, it is agreed among judges if you don’t have timing the rest doesn’t count.
In a previous “Tip Of the month” I covered timing that is enhanced by rhythm which is the  most important criteria for dancing at a high level. Technique is the grooming of the dance such as execution, posture, frame and footwork. Teamwork, where 2 people dancing help compliment one another. Showmanship can be produce by displaying your personality and enjoyment of the dance you are having which is difficult on it’s own; either the song and/or the partner is not the one you’d prefer in a Jack & Jill contest or your nervousness gets the better of you in any kind of contest or situation. This is when the winning dance has over come these objectives.
Content/choreography is where the dance offers contrast displaying a good basic foundation diversified with innovative patterns and styling. With this in mind, judges like to see the content relate to the nuances in the music, not just being on time and showing how many patterns or styling/syncopations you can execute unrelated to the music. Last but not least “Degree of difficulty” can add points to your performance; but not replace the rest of the criteria.
I hope you enjoyed reading this tip of the month and found it beneficial.
